Overview
The complete guide to siding from Quest Exteriors.
The siding on your home does more than dress up the curb appeal — it's the building's primary defense against wind-driven rain, UV breakdown, hail, and freeze-thaw cycles. When the siding fails, water finds the sheathing, the sheathing finds the studs, and the studs find your wallet. Quest Exteriors does siding installation property owners can trust to actually hold up, including new construction, full replacements after storm damage, and targeted vinyl siding repair nationwide.
Fiber cement siding — best known by the James Hardie siding brand name — is the dominant premium product in the residential market, and for good reason. It doesn't warp, doesn't rot, doesn't burn, and doesn't feed termites or wood-boring insects. It holds paint dramatically better than wood, doesn't fade as fast as vinyl, and resists hail far better than either alternative. Quest Exteriors is an experienced Hardie installer; we follow the manufacturer's HardieZone specifications (the more demanding HZ10 zone where humidity calls for it), which means proper flashing at every horizontal joint, correct nailing pattern, and the right gap-and-caulk treatment that keeps a 30-year warranty intact.
Our Hardie projects include HardiePlank lap siding in smooth or cedarmill texture; HardieShingle straight-edge or staggered for accent gables and entries; HardiePanel vertical siding with battens for the modern farmhouse aesthetic; HardieTrim for window, door, corner, and band detailing; HardieSoffit ventilation systems; and ColorPlus pre-finished products with manufacturer paint warranties. A properly installed Hardie wall lasts decades — we've replaced 20-year-old Hardie siding that was still structurally fine, just dated in color, and most of what failed at all was old caulk and paint.
Vinyl is still the value leader for budget-conscious projects and rental properties. Modern premium vinyl (.044 inch and thicker) holds color reasonably well, doesn't dent like aluminum, and installs quickly. The downsides are real: vinyl can warp under prolonged direct sun, becomes brittle in extreme cold, and is much more susceptible to hail damage than fiber cement. We handle vinyl siding repair projects routinely — replacing damaged panels after wind or hail, re-securing sections that have loosened, replacing matching trim, and correcting installation issues from previous contractors.
Cedar and engineered wood (LP SmartSide is the dominant brand) still have a place — particularly on custom homes, historic properties, and the modern-farmhouse look. We install cedar bevel and shiplap siding, LP SmartSide lap and panel siding (engineered for moisture and impact resistance), tongue-and-groove vertical siding, board-and-batten in cedar or engineered wood, and cedar shake gables and accents. Each of these products has its own moisture and finish considerations: we treat backs, properly flash, and finish exposed end-grain — the details that make the difference between a 30-year siding job and an 8-year siding job.
If you've been searching for siding installation after a storm, the first call should be to an inspector who knows what insurance carriers will and won't cover. Quest Exteriors documents siding damage as part of a broader exterior inspection — usually together with roof and gutter findings — and submits a complete claim package that minimizes the back-and-forth with the adjuster. Hail typically damages vinyl siding in patterns that are easy to identify; wind damage shows as missing or torn courses, usually at corners and edges; tree-strike damage requires careful matching to the original product line and color, often discontinued.
Discontinued color matching is one of the practical reasons people end up replacing more than they hoped. Homeowners insurance policies vary on whether they'll pay for matching when a discontinued product line is involved, and a knowledgeable contractor can substantially improve the outcome. We've worked on enough insurance claims to know which carriers handle matching well and which require specific documentation to approve a fair settlement.
We install siding for property owners who don't want to do this job again in eight years. That means we use the right product for your climate exposure, install per manufacturer spec (not contractor approximations), handle every detail of flashing, caulking, and finish, and back the work with a real workmanship warranty. Whether it's a new build, a tear-off-and-replace, or a vinyl siding repair after a storm, we'll quote it honestly and execute it carefully.
